From “One Nite Stand” to a musical affair

WP_20140213_022“So, how do they sound? Something like Kings of Leon?” I make a random guess to my friend who has invited me to see an Indian rock band in Hard Rock Cafe in Hyderabad.

“No, it’s not like that,” he says. “It’s One Nite Stand,” he keeps repeating the band’s name that – you want it or not – reverberates in your ears for some time. “And the lead singer is a pilot,” he adds.

Review: Patrick Wolf

Venue: Palladium, Riga (Latvia)
Date: 23/02/2013

The circus girl fell off her horse and now she’s paralysed. Patrick Wolf comes on a Palladium stage. Viola is playing, accordion is playing, harp is prepared, but his “guitar-friend” (ukulele) just died before the concert. Unlike the circus girl in the lyrics of “The Libertine” (the song that opens the concert), this misfortune doesn’t make Patrick Wolf paralysed. “This is gonna be a brand new show,” he says cheerfully. Throughout the concert London’s multifaceted musician proves it with his divine music, playful mood, sincere stories between the songs and his engaging character. It’s a fine, wintry evening of the February 23rd, and Patrick Wolf has stopped by Riga on his ten-year anniversary acoustic world tour.

Prāta Vētra gives another exceptional experience

Review: Prāta Vētra (Brainstorm) gig in Riga, Skonto Stadium
17.08.2012
It’s a band that doesn’t need any further explanations in their home country Latvia; a band that started in 1989 when five childhood friends formed it in their hometown Jelgava; a band that became internationally popular with the catchy and melodic My Star after performed in Eurovision Song Contest in 2000; a band that easily fills their concert venues breaking records in Latvian music scene; a band that is still active in 2012 and played their final gig of concert tour Vēl viena klusā daba (named after their latest album in Latvian) on 17th of August at Skonto football stadium in Riga. Ladies and gentlemen, Prāta Vētra or internationally known as Brainstorm once again showed that their songs – old or new – are remarkable experience when performed live and accompanied with much more than what we understand by music – visual and sound effects, flying in space, different guests to adorn the stage, surprises one after another. Yes, this is Prāta Vētra.

It was four years back when Manic Street Preachers played on Positivus stage for their first time. The fact that Damien Rice’s performance has been long awaited is shown by the tightly compressed crowd shortly before his show as there seems to be no free place left and for sure, no chance to take the front row. No wonder, his concerts in America and Europe have been sold out. The Irish folk-musician who is not giving live performances that often is thus exceptionally welcomed on Positivus stage with his first ever concert in Latvia.

Perhaps last year nobody would have expected to see English indie rockers The Vaccines on the main stage. But What Did You Expect From The Vaccines? has been released just last year. And if you didn’t expect, it has reached number 4 in the UK Album Chart. If you didn’t expect, they have toured around extensively ‘vaccinating’ masses with their music. This summer unexpectedly or expectedly the currently hottest new British rock band performed at Positivus.

SBTRKT or ‘subtract’ is known as a DJ under his colorful Indian mask. A person who wants to deliver his music and remain anonymous thus leaving only music that would speak about him. And it does! He has remixed such artists as Radiohead, Mark Ronson, Underworld, Basement Jaxx and others, and this year is one of the headliners who perform on Positivus main stage.
